people out here being disappointed by the new doctor who season, meanwhile i'm still riding the joyous high of having an orchestral rendition of the theme again. actually extremely funny how any post-ep debrief i'd want to do is immediately interrupted by "oh my god there are strings AND horns, FUCK this is the happiest i've ever been in my life", which makes me forget to remember if the episode was good. don't even get me STARTED on the caroline-shaw-type rhythmic breaths, like yes of COURSE i'd like some partita for eight voices in my delicious doctor who theme arranged for orchestra. FUCK, it makes me so happy.

Social commentary in "Beetlejuice."

For those who didn't live in the 80s, Delia Deetz is a commentary on the 80s New York Art Scene. Old warehouses were transformed into artist lofts. Artists were becoming famous, and, amazingly, rich, like Andy Warhol and Jeff Koons. Wanna-bes flocked to NYC. The trends were for experimental and provocative, the more In Your Face the better. Talent wasn't necessary; shocking people was. Creating "beautiful" things was anathema to the movement.

Tim Burton made Delia Deetz the perfect example of one of these New York wanna-bes. So you can understand her bitterness about being dragged from the New York loft studio she probably had to the middle of nowhere, in her opinion.

Barbara and Adam Maitland represent the opposing decor scene of the 1980s: Cottage country style. This was huge in the new suburbs. Pastels. Little floral prints. White geese with blue ribbons around their necks. Wallpaper edging. New England was seen as the epitome of this. Bed & Breakfasts popped up; the 80s TV comedy series Newhart was about B&B owners in Vermont.

And the trend at the time was finding old Victorians and renovating them (which is why PBS had "This Old House," back when they renovated old houses instead of building new ones).

The Maitland's decor is exactly the Cottage Country style. And they're renovating a Victorian.

In Beetlejuice you have New York Art Scene bulldozing Country-Farmhouse-Cottage .

And then there's him.

Absolute anarchy. Complete chaos. No rules (except those imposed upon him by the Neitherworld authorities). He's so repugnant even Delia Deetz is horrified.

New York City in the 80s was also crammed with violence and crime. Times Square was wall-to-wall porn palaces. Beej is like the worst of NYC distilled into high potency offensiveness and threat. Fighting him is what brings the New Yorkers and New Englanders together.

It'll be really interesting to see if Beetlejuice 2 has commentary about today's society. Well, there's already one example in the trailer.

If this doesn't get a cheer in the theaters I'll be shocked.
